Everyone has opinions about the perfect CV, but the first thing you have to accept is that there are no golden rules. There can be guidelines you may use but there are really no laws.
Certain features must be kept in mind. The CV should be word processed on quality white or cream paper. A clear font should be used and there should be plenty of white space. Make key point stand out but do not use varying fonts, italics, and underlying excessively. Be clear and concise and not gimmicky.
If the resume needs to be scanned, different typefaces and boxes can cause confusion. Recruiters suggest keeping your resume in plain text.
After developing your CV you can create a version that can be directly sent by e-mail.
Information that goes into Curriculum vitae
Put your name, address, e-mail, address and telephone number. Height weight and gender need not be included.
State the type or specific job you are seeking. Education should list schools attended, major studies or courses completed and also on the job training. Give the full name/s of the institutions attended. List all the certificates, degree, awards etc.
Your work history would list your jobs. if you have worked before, and you can include volunteer, part-time, summer and self-employment.
You can list your hobbies, sports you are involved in, college and school activities and things that interest you. Don’t put won everything but mention things that you feel may generate interest during your interview so that you can talk about them with some degree of enthusiasm.
You should list the things you are good at or have special ability /aptitude for. (Maybe proficiency in foreign languages, computer skills etc). Mention reference that would be available when requested.
Job information goes in Curriculum vitae
You need to gather specific information on the job you are applying for. Get the job duties from the job announcement. Find out about education and experiences so that you can match your education and experience with that required for the job.
Types of Resumes
The reverse chronological resume lists the jobs you have had with the most recent job first, your job before that second and so on. Job duties are clearly outlined. It gives a vivid picture of the applicant’s career and academic progression over the time.
A functional resume describes your skills, abilities, and accomplishments that relate to the job you are applying for. Employment history is less detailed than the chronological resume. A functional resume works best for those who have little or no job experience and may have a gap in their work history. It would be preferred by a person who wishes to emphasize work skills and accomplishments rather than job duties.
Some experts advise formatting your CV incorporating the merits of the 2 formats. You could incorporate a powerful opening section which attracts the reader’s attraction immediately by giving a summary of your overall professional capabilities. When applying for your first job this section could be utilized to outline your career objective. This is meant primarily to grab the reader’s attention as he/she scans the CV. Thereafter the CV can take on the chronological format.
Carefully proofreading
Proofreading the resume yourself and at least a couple of sets of trusted eyes is important. Review it for typos, spelling mistakes, poor grammar, awkward language, repetitiveness, misalignment and other mistakes. One pager length is the ideal size. With several years of relevant work experience, you may extend it to two pages or more. If you have you have less than five years of experiences, try to restrict yourself to one page.
